You Can Never Go Back to Square One

Many times, in therapy, in coaching, when a client experiences a setback, a bad patch, a stressful period. They say, “I feel like I’ve gone back to square one”.

Just because we feel or think something, does not make it true.

You can never go back to square one.

Why?

Because you can never unlearn what you have now learnt.

You are never starting from scratch. You are starting from experience.

Sometimes it can feel like you are in the same place you once were. It looks the same, it feels the same, you notice similar patterns. But it is not the same. You are always further on. Your spiral, your journey is still going upward. You are still closer to your goals than you were when you felt like this before.

Setbacks are normal because life is stressful and uncertain. Expect them. Go gentle with yourself. This is not a failing on your part, this is a natural part of both life and recovery from mental health struggles. Take the learning from them and ask yourself, what do I need in this moment? What small change can I make right now, to get me closer to where I want to be?

All my love,
Laura x
